A revolution, personal or cultural, is the turnaround of a predominant way to improve a situation or better oneself. Currently, the rise of affectivism—the integrative power of our body’s emotions, feelings, motivations, moods, and affective processes—has ushered in a new era of advances. For somatic psychotherapy in the United States, this means an insistence on a more inclusive somatics that is radically open to change.

Roots hold what’s fundamental in every practice, nourishing growth that continues to bloom anew in each generation and place.  This seminar will illuminate elements of the lives and work of three pioneers in the field of body-oriented psychotherapy and depth movement practices:  Stanley Keleman, Marion Woodman, and Joan Chodorow.

Having studied and worked with them beginning in the 1970s and 1980s respectively, these inspirational connections spanned four to five decades of learnings with them as my mentors, colleagues, and friends. In this seminar, I’ll reflect on who they were, some of the fundamental elements that inspired and informed their work, and how each contributed to the development of my own Soul’s Body® work, integrating conscious embodiment practices, depth movement approaches, trauma work, creative unfolding, and tending to the wellsprings that nourish a meaningful, soulful life.

This seminar will honor the preservation of historical somatic lineages, including highlights of who these pioneers were, some of the major elements in their groundbreaking work, and include brief film clips to give participants a sense of each of them as a person, together with the nature of their embodied, somatic movement work.

I’ll conclude by offering a further integration of their work with the body, psyche, spirit, community and nature in the Soul’s Body® work I’ve developed; an offering I hope will contribute to supporting further generations in building what is to come in our field. Together we will celebrate the depth and stability of our roots, and the continual growth of our dancing branches!
