JungianOrientedPsychotherapy

“When the great swing has taken an individual into the world of symbolic mysteries, nothing comes of it, nothing can come of it, unless it has been associated with the earth, unless it has happened when that individual was in the body… And so individuation can only take place if you first return to the body, to your earth, only then does it become true.”        ~  C. G. Jung

The Jungian Oriented Psychotherapy course is for licensed mental health professionals seeking to enhance their practice. This course presents basic building blocks of analytical psychology applicable in a range of settings, from community-based organizations to private practice, with a focus on cultivating a symbolic attitude between clinicians and their patients rather than a solely symptomatic approach.

Through didactic presentations, interactive discussions, and case material participants, will learn how to work with images and affects that arise from dreams, through creative endeavors, and bodily experiences, which may function as communications from the unconscious. Participants will gain tools to integrate depth psychology approaches in their clinical work and to support patients search for meaning.

[Section 3] Approaching the Unconscious: An Analytic Attitude
Wednesdays, October 14, 21, 28, 2020

Our bodies and dreams may be our closest links to the unconscious, expressing the soul’s longing through image, breath, gesture, the rhythm of our step, and the music of our speech. To gain further access to this rich and meaningful material, these three class sessions will engage concepts discussed in Chapter 2 (“The Approach to the Unconscious”) in The Symbolic Quest by Edward C. Whitmont. Our focus will include dreams, Jung’s Active Imagination, creative arts, and the body in analysis. These methods can be applied to a wide range of populations and clinical settings.

Instruction will include lecture, class discussion, reflections on the readings, clinical case material from instructor and participants, and experiential explorations of select approaches as avenues for working with the unconscious.
